LAS VEGAS (KSNV — The Southern Nevada Water Authority will lay off 101 employees.

News 3 has confirmed the layoffs also will include eliminating 55 vacant positions from the Authority and the Las Vegas Valley Water District.

A spokesman for the Water Authority says the layoffs stem from restructuring and include many employees who were part of growth and construction projects over the past several years.

Employees are being notified this week and will continue to get their salaries through mid-June.

This is the Authority's official statement:

"Today, the Las Vegas Valley Water District and the Southern Nevada Water Authority announced an organization-wide reduction in force. 101 employees are being reduced in addition to the elimination of 54 currently vacant positions within the two organizations.

"This significant reduction represents 7.5 percent of the total positions in LVVWD and SNWA, and will result in over $14 million in payroll savings.

"The economic downturn that hit our community beginning in 2008 dramatically impacted important sources of revenue that were used to pay for our community’s $3 billion water treatment and distribution system.

"In the intervening years, LVVWD and SNWA took many interim actions to maintain service levels and complete major infrastructure projects, while adjusting to the new economic realities.

"These included the elimination of non-permanent and contractor staff positions, the deferment of $801 million in major construction projects and savings of $109 million through refinancing existing capital obligations.

"For the past year, LVVWD and SNWA have engaged in a comprehensive process to develop a new Strategic Plan that recognizes the changed economic environment and transitions the focus of the organization from system expansion to the enhancement of service levels, operations and maintenance.

"This difficult but necessary action today will streamline the organizational structure, placing both LVVWD and SNWA on a sustainable financial path."
