LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- Someone close to the investigation into the death of an inspector at a construction site near Red Rock tells News 3 exclusively that negligence killed Mark Lovett, going as far as saying that there was an effort by some workers to cover it up.
Lovett was killed Tuesday morning at The Shops at Summerlin Centre construction site.
The source says Lovett had been standing on a platform three stories up. When he kneeled down to inspect a weld on the skeleton structure, a crew near him cut out a portion of the platform he was used to standing on.
After the platform was cut out, the crew failed to tell Lovett what they had done or barricade the hole with tape.
Lovett, the source says, stood up, turned around and stepped in to the hole created by the workers, falling to his death.
What's worse – according to the source -- the men who had made the mistake tried to cover up what they had done, running to get barricade tape while Lovett lay dead below them.
Other workers stopped them. The report from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is expected to reflect the error.
While a paper trail is built, the Lovett family grieves.
The family says they are consulting an attorney and -- at his advice -- will not comment at this time on the investigation.
