LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- Flags have been lowered to half-staff to honor the Metro officer who was killed while trying to save another man's life.

David Vanbuskirk, 36, fell to his death while conducting an air rescue Monday night on Mount Charleston. It was a maneuver that he has performed dozens of times before, according to Metro Sheriff Doug Gillespie.

Friends described Vanbuskirk the same way – as a caring, fun-loving man who loved life and dedicated his to saving others.

Members of the Sergio Penha Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy will have a fundraiser from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday for Vanbuskirk, who has been training at the gym for the past 10 years.
