LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- A teenage girl fought for her life at a middle school and freed herself from a man who sexually assaulted her.

Police have arrested, Richard Schlacta, 48, on charges of kidnapping and sexual assault.

The victim was attacked at 6 a.m. Wednesday at C.W. Woodbury Middle School, which is off Harmon and Sandhill. According to police, she was parking her bike at a rack so she could get on a school bus for a magnet program.

Instead she pushed, punched, clawed and screamed to get away from her attacker.

Police say Schlacta had a knife and used it on the victim.

The girl was able to escape her attacker, flag down a driver and take off.

Police say Schlacta also ran, but officers quickly apprehended him.

“We want to assure parents that schools are a safe place, but we have to take precautions,” said Clark County School District Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky. “We can't just rely on our neighborhoods always being safe places.”

School District police say they are re-evaluating where they patrol throughout the day; they are not on all school campuses.

They say they want to focus on increasing patrols at areas where students congregate before and after school.

The School District sent out an email Wednesday night to thousands of parents, calling for vigilance when students walk to and from school. Students will be given a list of safety tips to take home on Thursday, and parents are strongly encouraged to discuss them with their kids.
